composition problem

by Melanie
(St Paul, Mn USA)

This is my first oil painting and it's still only partially complete. My problem is I painted the second, lower horse too small and too low in the frame. My husband says it looks like two separate paintings. My question is how to fix it? I've contemplated adding another horse to the right hand corner of the scene (you can see where I've started sketching one in. The other option is what my husband thinks I should do - that is to paint over the mistake and try again. But I don't know how to do this without a shadow of the first horse coming through?
