First painting

This is my first proper attempt at a painting. It was done from a guide to oil painting book, they show you a step by step guide. I feel i've over done it with the oils and it's starting to get muddy. I found it very hard to put in any kind of detail in the painting, how do you build it up so you can show more detail without smudging?

Any help would be much appreciated.
