My Palette
"When you go out to paint and things mean only spots of color to you, you have your painters eye with you." Charles Hawthorne
On this page I will give information on my palette and oil paints I use. As an artist I am a color fanatic - I love different colors and love to try new ones from time to time. But I have learned to try to limit my palette in order to have a more harmonious painting. The colors I use are as follows: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Lemon,Cadmium Orange,Cadmium Red Light,Alizarin Crimson,French Ultramarine,Cobalt Blue,Cerulean Blue,Turquoise (sometimes),Winsor Green,Sap Green,Thalo Yellow Green (sometimes),Yellow Ochre,Raw Sienna,Burnt Sienna Below is a picture of my paint box with paints
The following pictures are of my palette and the paints I have on it.
This picture shows the paints without the gray mixtures that I mix up for painting with. I will describe this further down the page. You may also notice that I use a disposable palette sheet for easy clean-up. Another reason why I like to use the disposable palette sheet is it is easier to see the color mixtures on a clean palette. They don't cost much and you can even use wax paper for this purpose.
The next pictures describe what the colors are on the palette
These are my yellow colors; Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Lemon and Cadmium Yellow Light.
This close-up is my Cadmium Red Light and Cadmium Orange, Alizarin Crimson colors.
This close-up is my blue colors of Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean blue, Cobalt blue and Turquoise colors.
This close-up is of my greens which are Winsor Green, Sap Green and Thalo Yellow Green
These are my earth colors; Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna
For my dark color I mix up Ultramarine Blue and Alizarine Crimson and a dot of yellow to get a dark purple color.
I use a warm gray and a cool gray that I mix up myself. The next example is my warm gray which is composed of Alizarin Crimson and Titanium White.
The last gray mixture is my cool gray which I mix with Titanium White and a small dab of Ultramarine Blue
Here is my palette with the gray mixtures ready to use
One more important piece of advice is to always lay out your colors in the same order on your palette. That way you know exactly where they are every time.
