Oil Painting Portraits is a highly sought after skill
Painting a human portrait with oil paints is one of the most sought after painting skills among oil painters. It is one of the most difficult skills to master, but can be done with practice and perseverance and patience. The end result is absolutely timeless and beautiful. In my own painting experience I have not done much oil portrait painting but would like to do much more. In the example below I painted my daughter when she was about five years old. This painting was done from a photograph as it would be difficult to get a five year old to sit for about three hours so I could paint her.
I recently did a new portrait of my daughter who is 12 years old now. As you can see I still need more practice with this type of painting. Again, I did this from a photograph.
Here is a closer look at the portrait...
For beginners I recommend using a mirror to try and paint your self portrait. Many artist do this as practice and to improve their skills in portrait painting. For further information on this topic click on the links for the recommended books on this topic.
