Stippling

This is the technique of applying dots of color to build up color. Usually a small pointed round brush is used for this technique. Other tools that have been used are cotton buds or Qtips or a stick.

Stippling is another technique that takes a long time to do. You can use other tools such as a flat round bristle brush, a sponge, and a nail brush.

In Australia, the Aboriginal people are famous for their paintings and this is the technique they use with the dots in their paintings.

In the following example I used a type of stippling to create the water splashing around some horses.

To create the water, I used a flat bristle brush and tapped the white color around where I wanted it, trying to be careful not to brush the paint on.

Here is the complete painting "Horses in Water" where you can see the stippling effect of the water.
