Texture will give your paintings a look and FEEL
When you think of texture most people don't really think of oil paintings...they think of how something feels. You can give that look and feel to your paintings with oil paints too! Painting with oils allows for that build up of paint. Painting from thin to thick paint gives a textured look to your painting. Use thicker paint on the most important shapes in your painting. You must load your brush with lots of thick luscious oil paint to get that thick texture you seek. After it dries, you can run your fingers over the paint and actually feel the bumpy texture of the paint. In the graphic below is a picture of a Rhino that has been modified to give it plenty of interesting texture. Does this Rhino give you the feeling of scales like a fish?
Of course the Rhino was a drawing but when you paint with oils you can still build up thick luscious texture by painting thin to thick. In the next picture you can see the paint is a rough surface which was painted with a palette knife.
Here is more interesting texture in the same painting where you can see the paint built up in the tree areas.
The paint in this particular painting was built up using a palette knife and lots of thick oil paint on a brush. The following picture is the painting "River Trail" which was painted of Stanislaus River in California.
