Toned Canvas

This technique is just applying a color to a white canvas before painting over it. A toned canvas helps the artist judge the intensity of the color better than a white canvas. The reason is it gives you a rough idea of how the color will look with other colors on the canvas.

Due to slow drying of oil paints, many artist will tone their canvas with acrylic paint. Acrylic paint dries quickly and they can proceed with painting over the dried toned canvas in a more timely manner. I use acrylic paint to tone my canvas with. I usually use a reddish/orange acrylic color to tone with as this gives a warm effect to the painting.

The example below is a toned canvas using a raw sienna and yellow ochre color.

I usually use a fairly large brush to paint the acrylic paint on which has been thinned with water. But if you are using a large canvas, you can use a roller to do the job.
