Changing Values on Colored Blocks

On this page will be a step-by-step demonstration of blocks being painted and the changing color values as the light hits the objects and the color changes from that light source.

I start out with a rough drawing of the blocks. This was drawn with charcoal and can easily be rubbed out for corrections.

In the next step I begin the painting with a light cadmium yellow lemon..(notice I didn't stay in the lines) it is ok to adjust your painting as you see fit, this is not a color book exercise. Also notice how you can use the edge of the brush for getting into the shapes you have drawn.

In the next picture I am just continuing with the yellow color to completely paint the yellow block.

In this picture you can see the detail of the yellow paint

In the next step I have started with the red color

This next picture shows I am continuing with the red paint

Nearly finished with the red color

Starting to paint the blue color

Finishing up with the blue. Now you can see the different tones or values of the blocks where the light is shining on the lighter side and the darker tones in the shadow area. This is what creates your form or 3D realistic look.

Here is the blocks with color painted all around in a rough "broken strokes" technique. You can really see the sharp edges where the light color is next to a dark color.

Try this little exercise at home and see how you do. Don't worry if you have trouble drawing the blocks, the idea is to try to get the different tones or values of the colors.
